We call for our communities to:

voice what they hear and what they don't hear enough of,

to explore fresh ways to live their music.

    To express themselves however

    it comes naturally,

and to reconsider the status quo

    of contemporary musical lifestyles.

    to experiment with new genres,

and to break their habits of hearing

The STORY of the UNHEARD NEWSLETTER

Picture the archetypal artist, the modern musician. Depicted in film and social media as drifting or driving alone, down winding roads to stardom far ahead. The experiences of community and culture making their sound possible are barely visible in the clutter of the car. In there somewhere, under the charting and streaming and influence awards, foreign DJ remixes, and other dubious accessories, the stories, the testimonies of experience, gather dust. And radio stations churn top 40s, waxing the focus on the individual as the stories of local spaces are eclipsed by a reproduced mainstream. We hear and start to predict the same music. From all corners of what once were well-rounded musical communities, habits emerge. Tendencies, to isolate and insulate.

Familiar and naturalized comforts, habits of hearing reveal themselves only suddenly, guardedly, in sparse moments of epiphany. So our work here is to reveal them in every moment we share, in every space we are welcomed: to UNHEAR our biases and judgements. We share music news, unique content, and documented experiences with committed epistolary reflection. Breaking barriers and cracking the coated shells of industry bubbles is the way we choose to move forward. Leveraged by interdisciplinary expression and new modes of organization, we listen, write, and move forward.

    A Global Culture of Streaming?

This project idea began with the questions:

How does the medium for music listening affect

user exploration and appreciation for music and culture?

Does the medium affect the message?

Can we re-imagine music streaming and sharing systems to

create better engagement with the music content?

    MIXTAPER IDEA

Today's music streaming economy biases us toward consumption, track-based playback, centralized record labels. In a world where record sales have slipped away in favor of curated playlists, it has become crucial to bring back crate digging and investigate the impact of music organization systems. We are developing a new Unearth service application for members that seamlessly integrates your playlists into our central library, facilitating interaction across genres and helping you to craft your skills, gain listeners and unlock your sound!

    Local Music Sessions:

Sustainably enhancing local creative music engagement that remains otherwise buried by media trends, music industry, club formatting, etc.

Exploring the power of Participatory Design for

    Performance space and experience

This project was launched in November 2022 and encourages individuals to build and share personal music collections on our site while telling the stories and sharing the meanings behind their tunes. It began as a local student initiative to investigate the performance implications of and the overall reduction of individual expression within the local music scene around Lund University and is still growing to include more local artists.
